WHAT GOD LOOKS LIKE - SERIES

"THIS LOVE "


Ephesians 3:19 "and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

This verse is placed in the middle of a prayer by Paul for the church at Ephesus. This short prayer highlights "love" three times: "rooted and established in love", "to grasp how long and wide and high and deep is the love of Christ", and finally our focus verse, "and to know this love that surpasses knowledge".

This is so incredible! I love it. God wants us to "know this love that surpasses knowledge". In other words, let me rephrase this verse, "Paul wants us to know this love that surpasses what we can know." Did you catch it? It's like me saying, I want you to know something, but, oh yea, it surpasses what you can know. Are you a bit confused? I was too, at first.

To help explain, I will put the definition beside a few words in this verse. So, here it is, "to know (experience) this love that surpasses (goes beyond) knowledge (a measured boundary or reached limit)." Now, let's read it again substituting these words with their definition. "to experience this love that goes beyond anything that can be measured or any limit that is set." Wow - that's good!

Here's the point: God's love is beyond what we can measure! It always goes beyond where we think it should end!

Has someone given up on you? Do you feel unloveable? Have you given up on someone? Have you ever thought about yourself or someone else and said, "God can't love them"? Listen, we need to experience this love that goes beyond our limits. God's infinite love always surpasses our finite limits. Anytime someone says, "God can't love them", they have set a limit that God's love will always go beyond. Always!

Here's what we should do: Let's actively pursue the surrendering of our heart and life to allow Christ to work in us. The more we do this the more we will experience His love that cannot be measured, His love that cannot fail, His love that drives out fear, His love He has lavished on us, His love that caused Him to give His very life for us. Then, we will experience the life He came to give us, a life to the full, a life without limits!

Three concluding thoughts:

1. The purpose of God's Word is not reached when it is read through, but when it is lived out!

2. Don't put limits on God's love for you or anyone else because there are none!!!

3. Are you serving Christ from the LEVERAGE OF LOVE or the DELUSION OF DUTY???

WHAT GOD LOOKS LIKE - SERIES

"GOD IS GOOD"

J.I. Packer writes, “have you ever thought of God looking at you and your life with all your baggage, your junk, and your ups and downs, and then saying, ‘I want to be generous to you. I long to give to you just what would make you happy – not because you deserve it, but because there’s something about who I am that would bring me infinite joy to express that kind of generosity to you.”

Catch this - how much you trust in the goodness of God will determine the degree you surrender your life to Him! Are you trusting God's goodness in every area of your life? Or, are you letting Him have some areas while you work the other areas out yourself? Grasp this firmly - Life works best when it's lived God's way!

I want to share with you three aspects of God's goodness and then give you three ways we can respond.

1. God is SUPREMELY GOOD.
Psalm 84:11 "The LORD God is a sun and shield; He will give grace and glory. No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly before Him."

A. In other words, He is our "sun" - unlimited resource; "shield" - all-powerful protector; THIS IS WHO HE IS! He gives us "grace" - undeserving & unearned supernatural favor; "glory" - ability & wisdom to do things. THIS IS WHAT HE GIVES!
B. You cannot connect yourself to anyone or anything who will be better to you than a "supremely" good God! Supreme means highest, best, or greatest! God is saying that He will make sure you never miss out on life's best when you live it His way! "no GOOD THING will He withhold from those who walk uprightly!

2. God is SACRIFICIALLY GOOD.
Romans 8:32 "He who spared not His own Son, but freely gave Him up for us all; how shall He not also with Him freely give us all things."

A. Here's the point - God's goodness is embodied in His Son! Whenever you doubt the Father's goodness to you, remember what He gave for you - His only Son! If God the Father would not withhold Jesus Christ from us, why would He withhold anything else that is good for us?

3. God is SOVEREIGNLY GOOD.
Romans 8:32 "We know that all things work together for good, to those who love God, to the called according to His purpose."

A. Sovereign means that God is in complete control of everything. There is nothing outside of His control. Now, that does NOT mean that God causes everything to happen, but it does mean that He allows it. I have a question for you - Do you "know" this? I mean really hold this as a conviction, that God is sovereignly good! To the called according to His purpose, to those who love Him, we KNOW that ALL THINGS work together for GOOD!

B. I remember a specific time when I was a young kid. My sister and I were playing while my mom was in the kitchen baking a cake. I walked in to see how things were progressing and she had stepped in to another room. Hoping to get a quick taste, I stuck my finger in a bowl and licked, and to my surprise the taste was horrible. To this day, I'm not sure what that terrible taste was. I do remember this, that one ingredient alone almost warped my expectation of what the end result would be. Of course, when mom was finished, she called us in and I smelt something good - it was the finished product, the cake! I remember how my mind battled whether or not to try it, even though it smelt like cake and looked the part. Of course, when I tried it, all of my worries and doubts were overcome by the delicious taste!
Now, in a very real but different sense, this is also true of God and our lives. Are you doubting Gods ability to work all the things together for your good? What I didn't realize was that my Mom was sovereign over the cake baking process. She knew what ingredients were required - the good ones and the bad ones. God is sovereign, He is sovereignly good! He is intimately working all the circumstances of your life together for your ultimate good!

HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND?
1. REPENT - of our doubt & unthankfulness
Romans 2:4 "Do you despise the riches of God, not realizing that it is His goodness that leads you to repentance.
James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of lights..."

Action step: Thank God each day for one way in which you see His goodness.

2. REST - in times of difficulty
Psalm 31:19,20 "How great is your goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from the accusing tongue."

Action step: When you face difficulty, confess His goodness over your life, in that He causes all things to work together for your good. Remind yourself that you can rest during difficulty because of Gods goodness. His goodness is greater than any evil that comes against you.

3. RISK - stepping out in faith like never before
Daniel 11:32 "...but they that do know their God will be strong, and do exploits."

Action step: This may look different for some of us. Instead of going on vacation next year, take that time and savings to go on a mission trip. Risk stepping out in faith like never before! What does that look like for you?

CONCLUSION: In relationships, when you learn something new about someone, it should change the way you respond to them. Perhaps you didn't realize some of these things about our good God. Now that you do, REPENT by acknowledging them and by asking Him to forgive you of your ungratefulness and doubt. In doing this, it will open your heart more fully allowing these truths to assimilate. Thank Him that you can now REST in difficulties, trusting and following Him, knowing that He causes all things to work together for your good. Finally, RISK stepping out in faith like never before being strengthened by His goodness and knowing that He is for you. He will withhold no good thing from you as you walk uprightly before Him.

"He Cares"

1 Peter 5:7 "Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.


"HE CARES"

Do you know that? Have you forgotten? Let this serve as a gentle reminder - "He cares"..."He cares" for YOU.

Right now - in the midst of your circumstance(s) - "He cares"!

Listen, the secret to "casting" your cares upon Him is in you "coming" to Him! Many times, our focus is wrong when we are burdened or worried with the things of life. All we want to know is how to cast our cares on Him. But, He wants us to know how much He cares for us. The secret in knowing how to cast our cares on him is by realizing how much He loves and cares for us! Let this image sink deep inside your heart - the Father God, "caring" for you in this very moment, in the midst of whatever you're facing - "He cares"!

Several years ago, I was overwhelmed with many different struggles - working two jobs, going to school, feeling all alone, dealing with a bad relationship, living at that time away from friends and family. As I began to pray for God's direction and help, this verse, "He cares", came to my mind. While I asked God to help me understand how to cast my cares upon Him, I was reminded what I really needed was to know how much He cared for me! At that moment, the very presence of God covered me completely with love, peace, and joy.

Let me offer 3 suggestions for experiencing the reality of this truth for yourself:

1. BE SURE - Ask God to help you realize how much He cares for you.
a. Don't rest content until this thought impacts your daily life. He cares about the details of your life.
b. Look for other verses to reinforce this truth to you.

2. BE SURRENDERED - Make sure your whole life is surrendered under God's control.
a. If there are areas that are not under His Lordship, ask for forgiveness and help to change.
b. Yield those areas to Him immediately and daily!

3. BE STEADY - In other words, stay steadfast in the things you know are of God.
a. Don't be moved by circumstances. Many times we can't control what happens to us, but we can always control by Gods grace how we respond to what happens to us.

PURPOSE OF THIS BLOG - "What to expect"


As the verse above (Ecc. 12:11) indicates, my purpose for this blog is to communicate thoughts that "prod" you to "live well"! My aspiration will be to encourage and challenge you to move beyond your norm. Growth is essential if we are to "live well". Catch this - growing is a process and the best way to enjoy a process is to progress!

What you will find in this blog will not be a clean, mountain top viewpoint from a guy who has it all together; but a messy, process-submerged perspective that will carry hints of victories and defeats. I believe we will discover that this journey will be easier traveled together, and when we reach the mountain tops - it's party time! There are always two parts: messy process and mountain-top party! This is the process of growth. This is my invitation extended to you - join me!

This journey will cause you and I both to look deep within ourselves and ask questions, examine motives, confront weaknesses, and summon us to live at the edge of our potential! Get ready - we will be learning, unlearning, and relearning...each of us in different ways.
